Theatre Square and the Anikė sculpture

An old town square by the Drama Theatre with a fountain and the sculpture of Anikė from Tarau.
Theatre Square is a lively place for meetings, celebrations and culture in the old town of Klaipėda: concerts, events and the Sea Festival take place here. The square’s history began in 1819, when part of the castle moat was filled in and the New Market opened; a market hall followed in 1860. The Fish Market alongside took the catch fishermen brought across the lagoon. Though the square dates only from the nineteenth century, theatre has lived here since the seventeenth, when passing actors invited townspeople to open-air shows. In the early twentieth century it merged with Market Street into one trading area of carts, stalls and attractions. Today it is among the liveliest places in the city. (source, checked 2026-10-09)
