Białystok in brief

Białystok is the capital of Podlasie, worth visiting for Kościuszko Square, the Branicki Palace and an easy, cheap journey from Vilnius. The daytime direct FlixBus bus on 6 November leaves Savanorių Avenue at 07:40 and takes 4 h 20 min (FlixBus timetable, checked 2026-10-27), so Friday afternoon and the whole of Saturday are left for the city. From Kaunas the train with a change at Mockava takes 4 h 57 min.

There is no best season: the museums are open all year, and in summer a culinary picnic is held in the palace gardens. The main museums are open at weekends and closed on Monday. Several of them have a free day, so it is worth planning your tickets. You will find a full price comparison for two in the guide a weekend in Białystok (in Lithuanian). In Poland the clock is one hour behind Lithuania.

How to get there

From Vilnius by train. LTG Link runs with a change at Mockava, on one ticket. On Friday, 6 November, services leave Vilnius at 06:27 (arriving at 11:35, 6 h 8 min) and 12:35 (17:35, 6 h) (LTG Link search, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). Back on Sunday, 8 November, services leave Białystok at 10:26 (Vilnius 17:25) and 16:26 (23:25), journey 5 h 59 min (LTG Link search, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). In Poland the clock is one hour behind, so arrival times are local; prices depend on the service, so we do not write them here. The train does not stop in the centre but at Zielone Wzgórza station (LTG calls it “Žaliakalnis station”).

From Kaunas. As from Vilnius, LTG Link trains run with a change at Mockava (LTG Link search Kaunas–Suwałki, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-28). On Friday, 6 November, leave at 07:38 (arriving at 11:35, 4 h 57 min) and 13:38 (17:35); on Sunday, 8 November, from Białystok at 10:26 (Kaunas 16:20) and 16:26 (22:17) (LTG Link search, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). More trips: trips from Kaunas (in Lithuanian).

From Klaipėda. The LTG Link search Klaipėda–Białystok showed no results; start the journey from Vilnius or Kaunas.

Getting around the city

From the bus station (Bohaterów Monte Cassino St) to Kościuszko Square it is about 1.9 km on foot (24 min). To the Branicki Palace about 2.2 km (29 min). From Zielone Wzgórza station to the square it is about 4.9 km (65 min), so take a city bus or a taxi. The square is only 0.4 km (5 min) from the palace.

What to eat

On 6 June 2026 regional media reported that five Białystok restaurants had entered the Michelin guide for Poland. Regiment, Skórka Bistro Wino and Sztuka Mięsa are recommended, and Kwestia Czasu and Sztuka Chleba i Wina received a Bib Gourmand (Podlaskie Info, checked 2026-10-22). Regiment is described as a modern interpretation of Podlasie flavours. We did not check menu prices.

A dish of north-eastern Poland is kartacze, oval potato dumplings with meat, which in Lithuania we call cepelinai. They are most often served with crackling (Pogodne Suwałki, checked 2026-10-07).
