Royal Way and Neptune Fountain

An old town street with the Neptune Fountain and colourful buildings.
The Royal Way in Gdańsk led from the Upland Gate along Long Street to the Long Market; a royal procession of thousands could take up to eight hours to pass. On Long Street lived the wealthiest townspeople, and the Uphagen, Ferber and Schumann houses and the Lion Castle have survived. Behind the town hall the Long Market begins, for many centuries the centre of city life, where trade flourished and kings received oaths. The first four houses here were called royal, because kings stayed in them. By Artus Court stands the Neptune Fountain, a symbol of the city’s tie to the sea, and beside it the Golden House, called the most beautiful building in Gdańsk. (source, checked 2026-10-09)
