The Island Castle on Lake Galvė and Karaite kibinai: only 34 minutes from Vilnius by train, so one day is enough.

Contents

Trakai in brief

Trakai is worth the journey for the Island Castle on an island in Lake Galvė and for Karaite cuisine. From Vilnius the train takes 34 min, so one day is enough and you need no overnight stay. The castle and the other museums are open all year, but the opening days and hours change with the season.

There is no best time: in summer the museums are open longer, and in October and November the castle is open only Tuesday to Sunday. The lake activities (boats, paddle boards) are listed as seasonal, so look for them in the warm season. You will find the full price of a day for two in the guide Trakai from Vilnius (in Lithuanian).

The Island and Peninsula castles were built from the middle of the fourteenth century to the beginning of the fifteenth. Work on the brick Peninsula Castle took place in 1362–1382 and 1414–1430. It covered 4 ha and had 11 defensive towers (Trakai History Museum, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). The Karaites came from the Crimea at the end of the fourteenth century, and their kenesa in Karaimų Street operates to this day.

How to get there

From Vilnius by train. LTG Link trains take 34 min. On Saturday, 7 November 2026, services leave Vilnius at 07:17, 09:25, 11:36, 13:17, 15:14, 16:24, 17:40 and 19:25, and back from Trakai at 08:06, 10:27, 12:30, 14:10, 16:10, 17:25, 18:39 and 20:40 (ticket search, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). Prices depend on the service and the class, so we do not write them here. From 5 October to 29 November a changed timetable applies because of track repairs (PDF, in Lithuanian). How to buy: the train ticket guide.

From Vilnius by bus. Services: 07:25, 09:30, 10:10, 13:25 and 16:10 (national timetable data, checked 2026-10-08); the base fare of the 09:30, 10:10 and 16:10 services is €1.80.

From Kaunas. There is no direct service in the national timetable data. More practical: Kaunas–Vilnius, then the train; see Vilnius to Kaunas by bus or train.

From Klaipėda. There is no direct service. For a day trip from Klaipėda Trakai is too far: choose a weekend in Vilnius with a day in Trakai.

Getting around the city

The centre of Trakai is compact, and you reach most places on foot. From the railway station to the bus station it is 642 m (9 min), to the Island Castle about 3.1 km (42 min) by the OSM walking route (routing.openstreetmap.de, 8 October, 1.25 m/s). We found the distance from the station to the Island Castle on no official page, so we do not write it. The Trakai tourist centre’s autumn route suggests a 4 km walk from the station past Lake Luka, and a local bus from the station to the centre is given at €2 (trakai-visit.lt, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08; the page gives no date for the price).

Where to stay

For a day trip you need no accommodation. We did not check accommodation prices, so we do not write them. As an example of accommodation the tourist centre mentions the hotel Apvalaus Stalo Klubas (Karaimų 53A). You will find a list of accommodation on the trakai-visit.lt website.

What to see

The Trakai History Museum runs several sites. Hours and prices were checked on 6 October (opening hours, prices, both in Lithuanian); the last visitors are admitted 30 min before closing, and on the eve of holidays the opening hours are cut by one hour.

The Peninsula Castle. The second castle, at Kęstučio 4.

The Karaite Museum. The S. Šapšalas Karaite Museum at Karaimų 22 is open Wednesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00; a ticket from October to March is €7 (€4 reduced), from April to September €9 (€5).

The kenesa. There are two Karaite kenesas in Lithuania: in Vilnius (Žvėrynas) and in Trakai, in Karaimų Street. The Trakai kenesa was built in the nineteenth century. The Karaites hold a faith based on the Old Testament, and their language is still alive in daily life and rites (S. Šapšalas Karaite Museum, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

Užutrakis Manor. On the peninsula between Lakes Galvė and Skaistis, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the Counts Tyszkiewicz founded a manor estate with a palace designed by the architect J. Huss and a park designed by E. F. André. The palace (Užutrakio 17) is open Wednesday to Sunday 11:00–19:00, closed on Monday and Tuesday. A ticket is €4 for an adult, €2 for a pupil, student or senior, and a joint ticket to the palace and the historic parks visitor centre €5 and €2.50 (Trakai Historical National Park Directorate, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). The rules for the eve of holidays are not given on the page, so check before you go.

The old town and chocolate. The tourist centre’s autumn route suggests looking into the AJ Šokoladas museum (Vytauto 4) with more than 100 chocolate sculptures. Another stop is the Senojo namo knygynas bookshop (Vytauto 10). In Karaimų Street stand the miniatures of the “Namų istorijos” project, called the Little Town, and at Karaimų 1A there is a swing park. We did not check opening hours, so check them before you go (trakai-visit.lt, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08).

You will find all the places on the page what to see in Trakai. If Trakai is too little, look for historic places you have not yet seen the same day in Kernavė (in Lithuanian).

What to do by season

The warm season. From April to September the Island Castle is open daily 10:00–19:00, and a joint ticket for both castles costs €17 (€9.50 reduced; prices and opening hours, checked 2026-10-19, in Lithuanian). The tourist centre lists lake activities: boats, water bicycles, kayaks, paddles and bicycle hire. We did not check prices and season dates (trakai-visit.lt, in Lithuanian).

Autumn and winter. From December to February the Island Castle is open Wednesday to Sunday. We did not check the dates of the Christmas events on the organiser’s page, so we do not write them.

If it rains

The exhibitions of both castles are indoors, so rain spoils the trip less.

What to eat

Kibinai are a Karaite dish (Vikipedija, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). The tourist centre suggests having lunch at Senoji kibininė (Karaimų 65). The autumn route suggests the restaurant Le Vivier with a view of the lakes for dinner, and Senoji kibininė for lunch (trakai-visit.lt, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). Senoji kibininė (Karaimų 65) gives its opening hours on its website as daily 10:00–22:00 (kibinas.lt, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). We did not check prices and menus.
