Utena in brief

Utena is in eastern Lithuania, north-east of Vilnius, the centre of the county and the district (Lithuanian Universal Encyclopedia, in Lithuanian). The town grew out of a manor. In the fifteenth century a settlement formed at the confluence of the Krašuona and Vyžuona rivers, and its lands became the Utena manor (Visit Utena, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

In the nineteenth century the manor was bought by the landowner Aleksandras Bolcevičius, who rebuilt the whole ensemble. Between the wars his palace housed the “Saulė” gymnasium, and it now houses the Utena Education Centre and a regional open-access centre for natural and technological sciences (Visit Utena, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

People come here for a quiet weekend: museums, walks and the Skaistašilis forest. According to the tourism agency, it is the favourite recreation spot of Utena’s residents (Visit Utena, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). You will find a plan in the weekend in Utena guide (in Lithuanian).

How to get there

We checked journey times for sample days (from Vilnius on 2026-10-29, from Kaunas on 2026-10-07); the plan below is for the weekend of 6–8 November. Repeat the search for your own date.

What to do by season

In the warm season the tourism agency suggests the wakeboarding park Wake Zone Utena on the shore of Lake Dauniškis. In Vyžuona Park there is a ropes park, which is now open Wednesday to Sunday 11:00–19:00 (Visit Utena, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

In autumn and winter go to the Skaistašilis forest. When snow falls it becomes a cross-country skiing place, and deep inside lies the Pajuodupis bog (Visit Utena, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

Events. On the organisers’ page the lighting of the Christmas tree avenue is given as 4 December, and of the big town tree as 5 December (Visit Utena, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). More ideas: where to travel in Lithuania in winter (in Lithuanian).
