Alytus in brief

Alytus is the largest city in southern Lithuania. A loop of the Nemunas divides it into two parts, and green spaces take up more than a third of its territory (Alytus Tourist Information Centre, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). From Kaunas the bus takes 1 h 5 min, and from Vilnius from 1 h 40 min.

People come for the Nemunas valley, the tallest pedestrian bridge in Lithuania, the hillforts and the regional museum. The city is first mentioned in written sources in 1377. Most of the sights are in the open air, so choose a dry day.

How to get there

You can reach Alytus by bus. The times come from the national timetable data (checked 2026-10-29) for Friday (6 November) and Sunday (8 November); check again for your own date.

From Kaunas many direct services run; for some the base fare in the data is €4.60, and FlixBus did not show this route. See trips from Kaunas (in Lithuanian).

From Klaipėda the later Sunday services need a change. See trips from Klaipėda (in Lithuanian).

By car it is 105 km from Vilnius and 66 km from Kaunas (Alytus Tourist Information Centre, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). Buy tickets following the guide to bus tickets.

Alytus Regional Museum

The Regional Museum. Founded in 1928, its exhibition “Life on Both Sides of the Nemunas” tells the city’s history from the fourteenth century to the end of the twentieth (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). It is open Tuesday–Friday 09:00–18:00 and Saturday 10:00–16:00, and a ticket costs €1 (€0.50 for schoolchildren, students and seniors) (museum, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08).

The White Rose Bridge. The bridge was built in 2015 on the piers of an old railway bridge and is 240.52 m long. It opened on 4 June 2016. It linked the cycle paths on both banks of the Nemunas (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

Alytus Hillfort. It is dated from the middle of the first millennium to the fourteenth century, its slopes are steep, and a sculpture exhibition stands at its foot (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

The City Garden. The garden, famed for its rose beds, was finished in 1931, and a fountain from 1939 survives (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

Likiškiai Park. The park covers 55.25 ha, and the highest hill in the city (165 m) opens a panorama of the city (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

White Rose Bridge

A pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Nemunas (240.52 m), built on the piers of an old railway bridge; opened on 2016-06-04.

Punia Hillfort. Margis Hill stands at the confluence of the Nemunas and the Punelė, and in 1336 the Battle of Pilėnai took place here (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). We did not check public transport to it.

The former synagogue. The brick synagogue at Kauno g. 9 became, after restoration, the Audiovisual Arts Centre, which holds exhibitions and concerts. The exhibition “Šalom, Alytau!” tells of the life of Alytus Jews in the interwar years, when the community made up almost 30 % of the residents. The synagogue is decorated with a brick Star of David, and in Soviet times it was a salt warehouse (Alytus info, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-09). The museum page does not give the centre’s opening hours, so check events and hours on the museum website (in Lithuanian).

“Palas” and the Dzūkija Stone. Vilniaus g. 25 was the “Palas” cinema: films were already shown there in 1929, and the last screening took place in 2002. On the building’s façade you can see ears of rye that appeared in 1952 (Alytus info, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-09). Outside the city, in the pinewood of Vangeloniai village, lies the Great Dzūkija Stone: a boulder 3.82 m high and weighing 176 tonnes, the largest in Dzūkija, declared a natural monument in 1964 (Alytus info, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-09). We did not check public transport to it.

You will find more places in the section What to see.

The city’s history. Alytus has been mentioned in written sources since 1377, when the chronicle of Wigand of Marburg calls it a military and economic centre; in 1581 the city received Magdeburg rights and a coat of arms. In the eighteen-eighties it was turned into a border fortress of the Russian Empire, and in 1896 a railway bridge was built over the Nemunas. On 13 February 1919 the commander of a Lithuanian army regiment, Antanas Juozapavičius, was killed on the Alytus bridge, and a monument to him was put up in 1989 (VLE: history of Alytus, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

The city today. Alytus is encircled by a 16 km loop of the Nemunas, which divides it into two parts, and green spaces take up more than 30 % of the city. There are four parks, two hillforts (Alytus and Radžiūnai), two Dailidė lakes and almost 30 km of cycle and walking paths (VLE: Alytus, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). In 2025 it had 50,477 residents, making it the largest city in Dzūkija.

What to do by season

The tourist information centre offers the routes “First Acquaintance with Alytus” (2.4 km, 2 h) and “By Bicycle around Alytus” (19 km, 3 h) (routes, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). In spring the Sakura Alley (Žalioji g.), opened in 2016, blooms (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). We did not check event dates; the programme is published by the Alytus Culture Centre (in Lithuanian).

On a rainy day in Alytus choose two museums. Hours and prices were read on 8 October.

The pages do not give holiday opening hours.

What to eat

The restaurant “Dzūkų svetainė” (Rotušės a. 16) prepares Dzūkija dishes to order: dzūkiškos bandos, šiuškės, mushroom soup and potato pancakes (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). At the “Dzūkų alaus restoranas” (Vilniaus g. 35) food is cooked on a fire and beer is brewed in the brewery (description, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). We did not check menus or prices.
