Birštonas in brief

Birštonas is a small mineral-water resort in a loop of the Nemunas, suited to a quiet weekend without a car. Birštonas is first mentioned in 1382 in the chronicle of Wigand of Marburg (VLE, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08).

People come for the views from the hillfort and the tower, the treatments at the sanatoriums and quiet walks.

You will find the whole weekend plan in the weekend in Birštonas guide (in Lithuanian).

Getting around

Birštonas is compact, and you can reach most places on foot. We calculated the distances from the Birštonas bus stop (Vaižganto g. 2) along walking routes (OpenStreetMap, checked 2026-10-08) and estimated the time at a speed of 1.25 m/s:

Where Distance On foot
Birštonas Museum (Vytauto g. 9) 271 m about 4 min
Restaurant “Pievos” (J. Basanavičiaus a. 16) 382 m about 5 min
Sacral Museum (Birutės g. 10) 538 m about 7 min
Vytautas Hill (hillfort) 1.35 km about 18 min
Observation tower (Bokšto al.) 1.58 km about 21 min

How to get there

Direct buses connect Birštonas with Vilnius and Kaunas. The times come from the national public transport timetable data (checked 2026-11-01) for Friday, 6 November, and Sunday, 8 November; this data has no fares for most services, so we give no prices.

From Friday services Journey time
Vilnius 07:25 → 09:10, 09:30 → 11:20, 10:40 → 12:30, 12:35 → 14:22, 13:25 → 15:10, 16:10 → 18:00, 18:10 → 20:05 1 h 45 min–1 h 55 min
Kaunas e.g. 13:50 → 14:53, 18:30 → 19:28 about 1 h

From Vilnius. The bus goes via Trakai and Prienai. On Sunday buses to Vilnius leave at 07:10 (arriving 09:00), 08:33 (arriving 10:20), 13:25 (arriving 15:15), 14:35 (arriving 16:35), 17:28 (arriving 19:15) and, the last one, 19:30 (arriving 21:10). You will find more trips in the list of trips from Vilnius (in Lithuanian).

From Kaunas. On Sunday there is, for example, a 14:27 bus from Birštonas to Kaunas (arriving 15:25). Read about the city on the Kaunas page, and look for other trips in the list from Kaunas (in Lithuanian).

From Klaipėda. There is no direct service. We did not reliably check connections, so we do not give them; for people from Klaipėda there is a list of trips (in Lithuanian).

We explain how to buy a ticket in the guide to bus tickets.

Where to stay

“Tulpė” Sanatorium

A sanatorium in Birštonas: beauty and health services and medical rehabilitation in several buildings.

In Birštonas accommodation is usually combined with a spa. The health section of the municipality’s website mentions the sanatoriums “Tulpė”, “Versmė” and “Eglė”, “Vytautas Mineral Spa” and “Royal Spa Residence” (Birštonas municipality, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08).

The “Tulpė” weekend programme “Atgaiva” (2 nights) costs from €174, and “Harmoningas savaitgalis” from €199 (tulpe.lt, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-06). The page does not say whether the price is for one person or for two. More about spas: spa weekends in Lithuania (in Lithuanian).

What to see

Museums. The Birštonas Museum (Vytauto g. 9) and the Sacral Museum (Birutės g. 10) are open Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sunday 10:00–16:00, and closed on Monday; on the eve of a public holiday the hours are cut by an hour. A ticket to one costs €2, and to both €3 (visitor information, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08).

The observation tower. The tower stands in the Nemunas Loops Regional Park. The observation deck is at a height of 45 m, reached by 300 steps with six resting places, and there is no lift (VLE, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). It is about 21 min on foot from the bus stop to the tower, so give it half a day together with Vytautas Hill. We did not check an official opening time or ticket price for the tower, so we do not give them.

What the Birštonas Museum shows. It is housed in a log resort villa with decorative turrets, designed in 1932 by the engineer V. Muzikevičius; after the war the rest home “Ramunė” operated here. The exhibition covers the history of the resort, a horse-drawn phaeton, the furniture of the dentist Ignas Šablauskas and the belongings of the resort doctor Jurgis Venckūnas. The beginning of Birštonas as a resort is dated to 1854, when the doctor B. Balinski leased the mineral springs (museum, history, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-09).

The Sacral Museum. It was opened in 2000 in the old presbytery built in 1880 by the Church of St Anthony of Padua (built in 1909). On 25 December 1957 Bishop Teofilius Matulionis consecrated the future cardinal Vincentas Sladkevičius a bishop here, so the exhibition is devoted to both. On show are a rosary used in Vladimir prison, the cardinal’s typewriter and a letter from John Paul II (museum, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-09). In the rain both museums fit into half a day.

You will find more places in the sections What to see and What to do.

If it rains

In Birštonas on a rainy day there are few indoor places: the town’s two museums. Hours and prices are in the section “What to see”; workshop prices were read on 8 October (visitor information).

We do not give prices for the sanatoriums’ pools and treatments: we did not check public dated price lists for them, and many programmes are sold with accommodation.

What to eat

The restaurant “Pievos” (J. Basanavičiaus a. 16) is open Monday–Thursday and Sunday 9:00–20:00, and Friday and Saturday 9:00–22:00. The website says that the kitchen is seasonal and relies on local farmers, and that in 2026 the restaurant received the Michelin Bib Gourmand award (pievosbirstone.lt, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). You can book a table online; we found no prices on the website, so we do not give them.

More cafés and restaurants are in the list on the Birštonas municipality website (in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). We did not check menus or prices there.
