Rumšiškės in brief

Rumšiškės is in Kaišiadorys district, 20 km east of Kaunas, on the shore of the Kaunas Lagoon (Lithuanian Universal Encyclopedia, in Lithuanian). The Lithuanian Ethnographic Museum was founded here in 1966, one of the largest open-air museums by area (195 ha) in Europe. It shows the daily life of peasants and townspeople of Dzūkija, Aukštaitija, Suvalkija, Samogitia and Lithuania Minor (exhibition, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). The museum suggests allowing 2–5 hours or a whole day (plan your visit, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

You will see the full exhibition with the interiors open only in season; at other times the museum is visited as a park. Hours and prices are in “What to do by season”.

The minibus from Kaunas to the stop “Muziejus” runs only at weekends from May to September and on holidays. On other days it stops at the Rumšiškės Pavilion stop, from which it is about 500 m to the central entrance (plan your visit, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). Getting around the museum

Everything is on foot: the village fragments are joined by a 7 km circular route. The roads are paved or gravelled, pushchairs can pass them, and the town square is paved with stones with a smooth path around it (FAQ, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). Dogs are allowed, but not into the indoor exhibitions, and you must have waste bags.

If you arrive by car, parking for 24 hours costs €2, and you can leave free of charge within the first 30 min and within 30 min after payment. Driving into the territory by passenger car (up to 7 seats) costs €30, and you buy visitor tickets separately. So it is usually better to park in the car park (ticket prices, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

Where to stay

We did not check accommodation prices. In the museum town you can stay in the Girkalnis House and in Monopolis: the latter is adapted for disabled people, with a shared kitchen, and takes groups of up to 20 people (accommodation, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). Find other options in Kaunas, 22 min away by car.

What to see

Along the 7 km road between forests and meadows stand village fragments, homesteads with orchards and vegetable gardens, wayside shrines, mills, smithies and an oil press. In the centre is a town with the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and on the edge the Aristavėlė manor palace and the Exile and Resistance sector (exhibition, in Lithuanian, page updated 22 November 2023, checked 2026-10-07).

The museum reflects the daily life, work and traditions of peasants and townspeople of all the regions of Lithuania from the end of the eighteenth century to the first half of the twentieth. The technical objects – mills, smithies, a fulling mill and an oil press – recall how the village produced household goods. When the interiors are closed, you look at the buildings from outside.
