Šilutė in brief
Šilutė is in western Lithuania, in the Coastal Lowland, and the Šyša flows through the town. In 2023 it had 16 200 inhabitants (Lithuanian Universal Encyclopedia, in Lithuanian). In German the town was called Heydekrug, and until 1919 it belonged to Prussia and the German Empire. West of the town the Nemunas Delta Regional Park begins.
The main reason to come is the Hugo Šojus manor with its museum. The town is small, so a day trip is enough.

Šilutė Hugo Šojus Museum
The manor palace at Lietuvininkų 4: the Šojus collections, a travel exhibition, a study and the Fresco Hall.
What to see
The Hugo Šojus manor and museum (Lietuvininkų 4). In 1889–1944 the Šilutė manor belonged to the Šojus (Scheu) family, and the manor was made famous by Dr Hugo Šojus (manor history, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). The manor displays the Šojus archaeological collection, natural history and ethnographic exhibitions, a travel exhibition, Hugo Šojus’s study and the Fresco Hall (exhibitions, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). A tourist information centre also operates on the manor estate (VLE).

The history of the manor. The Šilokarčema manor was founded in 1721 during the Prussian reforms, and in 1819 it was acquired by the Radke family. In 1889 Hugo Šojus bought the manor for almost 540 thousand marks: after the fire of 1896 he rebuilt the farm buildings, raised the yard by about a metre against floods, and in 1906–1907 rebuilt the palace. He donated plots of land for town buildings, which is why he is called Šilutė’s patron. In 1959–1985 an agricultural technical school operated at the manor, and restoration began in 1990 (manor history, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).
The museum’s branches. The Šilutė museum includes exhibitions in Švėkšna and Žemaičių Naumiestis. The Švėkšna exhibition shows surviving manor items, because in 1940 the manor’s archive and books were burned and the furniture and paintings taken away (Švėkšna, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). The Žemaičių Naumiestis museum has operated on Pergalės Square since 1970, and in the K. Vilniškis homestead since 2012 smithy and farm implement exhibitions are shown (Žemaičių Naumiestis, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). We did not check the branches’ opening hours, so before you go phone the museum on 8 441 62207.
The manor park. By the manor stands a monument to H. Scheu, erected in 2001 (VLE, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

The old town streets. On Lietuvininkų and Liepų Streets historicist brick and Art Nouveau residential houses have survived, and the post office building was built in 1909 (VLE, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). In the Market Square stand Art Nouveau buildings of the early twentieth century. The Church of the Holy Cross complex was built in 1854, and it has wall paintings (sgraffito, 1913) and a stained-glass window “Christ” (1926).
The Šyša, the bridges and the Sudermann monument. The two parts of town on either side of the Šyša are joined by a railway bridge built in 1875 and a road bridge of 1914. In town stands a monument to the writer Hermann Sudermann: built in 1930, rebuilt in 1996. The old Evangelical Lutheran cemetery has survived, and Hugo Šojus was buried in the town cemetery in 1937 (VLE, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).
Ventė Cape. A peninsula in the Curonian Lagoon, about 27 km from Šilutė by car. At the ornithological station, founded in 1929, 60–100 thousand birds are ringed every year, and during the autumn migration up to a million birds sometimes fly over Ventė Cape in a day. There is a bird migration exhibition, and the 11 m high brick lighthouse may be climbed (station, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). We did not check public transport here.

The Nemunas Delta and the town’s birthday. The Nemunas Delta Regional Park reaches Šilutė from the west. The town’s birthday is celebrated on the last Saturday of May: that day commemorates the first inn, founded in the forest in 1511 (VLE, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). We did not check public transport to the park.
Educational sessions. The museum runs educational sessions at the manor, in the Švėkšna and Žemaičių Naumiestis exhibitions and at the spiritual culture centre “Eglutė”, as well as lectures on the events of January 1923 in the Klaipėda Region and on the development of mills (educational programmes, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).
What to do by season
The museum’s autumn–winter timetable applies from 1 September to 30 April: Tuesday to Friday 10:00–18:00, Saturday 10:00–16:00, and the exhibitions are closed on Sunday and Monday. On the last Thursday of the month out of season the museum has a cleaning day: 26 November it is closed (opening hours, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08).
