Plateliai in brief

Plateliai is a small town in Žemaitija National Park, 15 km north of Plungė, on the western shore of the lake. In 2021 it had 713 inhabitants (Lithuanian Universal Encyclopedia, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). The park directorate is based here. It is worth coming for three things: the largest and deepest lake in Samogitia, a manor estate with exhibitions, and the Cold War Museum in a former missile base.

Without a car the most convenient way is this: by train to Plungė, then by bus or bicycle. So a one-day trip needs more careful planning than Plungė itself.

How to get there

The park directorate writes that from Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and other towns you must get to Plungė bus station, and from it take a local bus to Plateliai. The railway station is next to the bus station (how to get here, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

Buy tickets following the train ticket instructions. People from Klaipėda should also look at the day trip to Plungė (in Lithuanian).

What to see

Lake Plateliai. The deepest place in the lake is about 48.5 m, 17 streams flow into it, and the Babrungas flows out. The water washes 7 islands. On Castle Island in the fifteenth century stood a castle of Lithuanian nobles, joined to the Šventorkalnis peninsula by a wooden bridge about 300 m long, whose sixteenth-century piles have survived (park website, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

The viewing platform. It is on the north-eastern edge of the town: from here you see Castle Island and Veršiai Island and Šventorkalnis. The platform is adapted for people with mobility and visual disabilities, and has a board with legends about the lake and a tactile board with Braille (park website, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

The manor estate. Until 1940 the Plateliai manor belonged to the French Counts Choiseul-Gouffier. The wooden palace burned down in 1943, and the park and the farm buildings survived: in the stables there is a Shrovetide exhibition, in the granary an exhibition of Žemaitija National Park, and in the cellar the Traditional Crafts Centre (park website, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). A ticket for independent visits to both exhibitions costs €6, to the exhibition of the Plateliai visitor centre €1 (2026 prices, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07). We found no reliable current opening hours: phone +370 448 49231 (contacts, in Lithuanian).

The church and bell tower. The wooden Church of Sts Peter and Paul was built in 1654–1744, and beside it stands an eighteenth-century bell tower with a bell of 1648 (Lithuanian Universal Encyclopedia, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-07).

The Cold War Museum in Plokštinė. The museum operates in a former Soviet underground ballistic missile launch complex. In 1963–1978 four medium-range SS-4 missiles with 2-megaton warheads were deployed here (park directorate, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). On display is also a shaft about 30 m deep, in which a combat missile stood for almost twenty years (Lithuanian Universal Encyclopedia, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-08). Address: Šilinės 4, Plokščiai village; tel. +370 677 86574.

Practical information

Weekend plan

Without a car, a day trip means matching a train and a local bus; the timetables allow it, but the choice is narrow.

Saturday. Take the 09:16 train from Klaipėda to Plungė (10:14). Take the 11:00 bus to Plateliai (11:35), look round the viewing platform and the manor estate. Have lunch at the Plate Lyn snack bar (Žemaičių Kalvarijos 36, Saturday 11:00–20:00; OpenStreetMap, checked 2026-10-25). Back by the 15:40 bus (Plungė 16:40) and the 16:51 train (Klaipėda 17:36). The later 16:35 bus reaches Plungė at 17:00, after that train has left, and the next one to Klaipėda leaves only at 22:38 (LTG Link, in Lithuanian, checked 2026-10-29). Between the buses you have 4 h 5 min in Plateliai. The Cold War Museum is outside the town, and the 24 km lake circuit by bike takes half a day, so in one day you will manage only one of them.

Look for similar trips in the lists of trips from Klaipėda (in Lithuanian) and trips from Vilnius (in Lithuanian). Nearby are the pages of Telšiai, Kretinga (in Lithuanian) and Palanga (in Lithuanian).
