Ryanair baggage rules 2026

Ad. On some links we earn a commission if you book. The price does not change for you. How we earn (in Lithuanian)
In short: on a Ryanair flight you can take one small bag of up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm, which fits under the seat in front, at no extra charge. A second, 10 kg case of 55 × 40 × 20 cm is allowed in the cabin only by the “Priority & 2 Cabin Bags” service. Otherwise you will have to buy baggage or pay at the gate, where it is more expensive.
We checked the rules on 7 October in Ryanair’s terms of carriage (valid from 25 June), on the price page and in the company’s press release. The Ryanair help centre (help.ryanair.com) would not let our browser in, so we did not use it.
What Ryanair baggage rules apply in 2026?
A small bag. Point 8.3.1 of the terms of carriage allows one small cabin bag of up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm. It is included in any ticket. On 4 September 2025 Ryanair announced that it had changed the sizers at all 235 airports to this size. The announcement says the bag must fit under the seat.
A large hand-luggage item. If you have bought “Priority & 2 Cabin Bags”, you can take a small bag and a case of up to 10 kg and 55 × 40 × 20 cm (point 8.3.2). For operational reasons the airline may put the case in the hold.
Infants. An infant who flies on a parent’s lap has no additional hand luggage.
Shopping at the airport. A duty-free bag with purchases is allowed in addition to the cabin baggage (point 8.3.5).
How much does extra baggage cost?
On the Ryanair price page (checked on 2026-10-07) prices are given with the sign “€/£”, that is, the same amount in euros and pounds. You will see the exact price when you book, because it depends on the route and the date.
| Service | When booking | After booking or at the airport |
|---|---|---|
| Small bag | €0 | €0 |
| Priority & 2 Cabin Bags | €12.49–36 | €19.99–45.50 |
| 10 kg checked bag | €10.49–44.99 | €24–75 |
| 20 kg checked bag | €21.49–59.99 | €39.99–75 |
| 23 kg checked bag | €28.99–80.99 | €54–97 |

Other amounts from the same page:
- At the bag drop. If you did not choose a bag when booking, a 10 kg bag there costs €35.99 and a 20 kg one €59.99.
- Excess weight. At the airport you pay €13 for each extra kilogram.
- Number of checked items. The terms of carriage allow you to check up to three items for a separate fee (point 8.1).
We did not check the dimensions and maximum weight of checked baggage, because they are given by the blocked help centre. Look at the booking page before you fly.
What happens if the baggage is too big?
Oversized or extra baggage at the gate is refused or, if possible, left in the aircraft hold for a fee (point 8.3.4). According to the price page:
- A 10 kg bag brought to the gate (for passengers without priority): €46–75.
- An oversized case (over 55 × 40 × 20 cm): €70–75.
Ryanair’s announcement states that passengers who do not keep to the limits will have to pay the checked-baggage fee at the gate. So measure your bag in advance.
What can you take in the cabin, and what not?
Point 8.4 of the terms of carriage describes electronics and batteries:
- Spare batteries and power banks. Up to 2 power banks, and up to 20 spare lithium batteries in all, each up to 100 Wh.
- How to carry them. Each protected against short-circuiting, for example in its original packaging. Keep them on you or in a bag under the seat, not in the overhead locker.
- How to use them. You may charge a phone, but not during take-off, landing or taxiing. A power bank may not be used to charge another power bank in the cabin.
- Checked baggage. Spare batteries and power banks may not be put there.
Sharp objects with blades longer than 6 cm, tools, ski and hiking poles, rackets and fishing rods are forbidden in the cabin. They must be checked. Carry jewellery, medicines, keys, cameras and documents in the cabin, not in checked baggage (point 8.7.2). EU security rules apply to liquids (point 8.5.5), and we described the limit at Vilnius and Kaunas airports in the article on liquids in hand luggage (in Lithuanian).

What to do before you leave
- Measure the bag with the pockets filled: 40 × 30 × 20 cm.
- Decide on a second case when booking. After booking and at the gate it is more expensive.
- Move batteries from the suitcase to the rucksack under the seat.
- Check the checked-baggage limits on the booking page.
Flying with another airline? Compare with the airBaltic baggage rules (in Lithuanian).
